San Diego FC Beats Toluca 3-2 in Dramatic Concacaf Champions Cup Clash
In an intense night of football at Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego FC secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Deportivo Toluca in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the Concacaf Champions Cup. The match was packed with drama, goals, red cards, and late pressure as both teams fought hard for an advantage ahead of the second leg.
The match started with Toluca controlling possession early on. The Mexican side looked comfortable on the ball and attempted to create chances through quick passes and aggressive attacking play. Their pressure paid off in the 16th minute when Toluca earned a penalty after a foul inside the box. Mexican international Jesús Gallardo stepped up and confidently converted the spot kick, giving Toluca an early 1-0 lead.
Things quickly became more difficult for San Diego FC. Only minutes after conceding the goal, striker Marcus Ingvartsen received a red card, leaving the MLS side with ten players for most of the match. Despite the disadvantage, San Diego showed remarkable determination and resilience.
The home team managed to respond in the 32nd minute. A defensive mistake from Toluca allowed San Diego to create an opportunity inside the box. Finnish midfielder Onni Valakari capitalized on the chance and scored the equalizer with a precise low shot past goalkeeper Hugo González. The goal energized the crowd and shifted the momentum of the game.
The second half began in spectacular fashion for San Diego. Just seconds after the restart, midfielder David Vázquez scored his second goal of the match, finishing a well-worked attacking move to give San Diego a 2-1 lead. Toluca suddenly found themselves chasing the game despite having the numerical advantage.
San Diego continued to press forward and struck again in the 51st minute. Danish winger Anders Dreyer delivered a powerful shot from a counterattack, extending the lead to 3-1. The goal stunned Toluca and gave the MLS club a two-goal cushion.
However, the drama was far from over. Late in the match, San Diego was reduced to nine players when midfielder Manu Duah received a red card for handling the ball inside the penalty area. After a VAR review, the referee awarded Toluca another penalty.
Brazilian forward Helinho calmly converted the penalty in the 90th minute, bringing Toluca back into the match with the score now 3-2. The final minutes were filled with pressure from the Mexican side as they searched desperately for an equalizer.
Despite the late push, San Diego FC managed to hold on for the victory. Playing with only nine men, the team displayed impressive defensive discipline and determination to protect their lead until the final whistle.
This result gives San Diego FC a slight advantage heading into the second leg in Mexico. However, Toluca will feel confident playing at home at the Nemesio Diez Stadium, where they will look to overturn the one-goal deficit.
The match highlighted the growing rivalry between MLS and Liga MX clubs in continental competitions. San Diego’s victory is a significant statement for the American side, showing they can compete with top Mexican teams even under difficult circumstances.
The second leg promises to be just as exciting, with Toluca expected to attack aggressively while San Diego aims to defend their lead and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
